Simple as falling off a log
That's what the boss man said~
But sinking post holes in rocky land
Is something that I dread~

Not one of them sank easy
The words that described same~
Would surely melt a mothers ears
And God how I prayed for rain~

There was always lots these largest rocks
Where I wished and prayed they d not be~
How the crow bar vibrated and the blisters grew
Often bars stuck and just would not come free~

Slowest going and solid yakka then
With wire and posts and netting~
Not to mention up hill all the way
For a cold beer I was often fretting~

Working hard daylight till dark
And till one could hardly see~
Straight to bed and sleep like a log
Next morning back there early I would be~

I remember all those days on the fence line
Young men grew faster then~
Knew what A days work really meant
Not in a hurry to go back ag'en~

Broken backs , blisters and the hottest days
Broken shovel handles and blunt crow bars~
How happy we were when the sun finally died
Giving way to dark night and brightest stars~

On the fence line back then
How I remember every single day~
How hard we worked back then
And might I say for little pay~
