2000 Years in an Afternoon

High out, step-edged, on the white-doved balconyOverseeing the deep cut shell of Greece,
Abrupt cliffed, on the Aegean’s blue gorged seas
Into the jut, jawed morning, we sit still.
Below, each harbored boat postures idyllic
Waiting for a brush, immortality
Spreads to the horizon, a girl’s blushing,
The red faced sun rises, ponderously
Out on the hammered waves, the early boats
Adventurous and hungry with full sails
Drive into the fuse of morning, fearless
Steeped in bronzed ambitions, rounded with glory
And you, where are you? My dear Odysseus
Caste out into the seas rim, cleft from land
Spun mad to the tune of sirens knifed songs.
Penelope knew you could never stay
Your apparition still roaming out there,
Plying it’s cunning to pluck out, a god’s eye
Wrestling with Neptune, your keel cuts waves,
The plume of your sail, severing the fathoms
Deep into the frenzied feed of living
with an Olympian wind, gusting down
you chase into a blind eternity;
We in wide brimmed hats, watch in heated shade
