Lord, give me the strength
To not give into the ones
That don’t want me to
Achieve a state of grace
A state of happiness
For they could never make it
Without using
Abusing
Manipulating
But never having the guts to admit
They were wrong
As they were born only
To spread guilt and shame.

It requires a ton of discipline
Just to be patient
And let the universe take its course
Yet I refuse to be pushed around
And made to feel inferior
While being told that I’m somehow superior
Based on how I look
It’s a losing proposition
A most dire condition
No one wants to take the time
To truly dig beyond the surface
Leaving behind archaic stereotypes
And wayward assumptions
With words that no longer shock
And have been drained of meaning.

Don’t ever give up
Even if the prognosticators demand it
You may feel like David or Job
Been known to be hyperbolic in tone
You may know the answer
But if they aren’t receptive
You’re wasting time
And you must realize
When they wake up
It may not be due to your efforts
But I’m willing to give credit
When it’s just
No matter what rung we occupy on the ladder
Or how we appear on the surface
But I refuse to be led by appearances
And so-called reputations alone.
