I yearn to smile
Joy has faded
Too serious these days
What’s it gonna take?
Seems nothing can fill the soul
Outside of the short term
Perhaps I’m searching too hard
Perhaps the answer is in front or inside of me
But every time I compare
I feel so down and out
And all the gifts
Gratitude
Seem to disappear.

I won’t be taken aback
For being judged self-absorbed
The feeling of helping others
Not for monetary gain
But to make their day a bit brighter
Is far more powerful than possessions
That can’t be taken with me
Just a clever ruse to avoid
People getting to know me
Loving me for who I am
Rather than what I have.

If I seem to be a contradiction
I will not argue
It would be a waste of breath
And your time
Like I said at the first
The smile seems to elude me
Left with the unanswered question
What am I gonna do about it?
