Time is a great healer
As long as you don’t keep
Picking at the scabs
Risk of being cast out
As a masochist that
Declares how awful
The past yet while
Holding a demented fondness for it.

Scared of success
You scoff at such a statement
For in this day and age
Every accomplishment
Is dismissed
Glossed over
Or downplayed unless
You meet the qualifications
Yet you fear you just got lucky
Are driven by the question
What have you done for me lately?
Unable to bask and bathe in the achievement
Such a pity you keep gifts so close within
And a wandering eye to the past
Instead of being focused on the present.

So don’t be upset
When the lesser and mediocre
Pass you by for
They made best use of their potential
While you frittered away the latter
On trying to change the exterior.
