Bottomless conviction in humanity
Will only bring disappointment
No faith will deliver bitterness
So there’s the catch
And you can retch at the sight of me
With my hand out
To foster a connection
But I can’t change
Your assumption of me
Because it’s gonna take years
Of deprogramming to wipe
Out the insidious brainwashing from birth.

Yet you see
No problem in consorting
With the dreg manipulators
Of the hollow earth for
Only a fool believes
He can change the world
A misanthrope declares
That no one will ever understand him
Never walking in their shoes
The reverse is also true, mind you.

I know, I can’t do it all
There has to be some interdependence
A weary connection
But I can’t pretend to be someone else
Without the hard toil and bloodletting
For dependence remains a child
Wrapped inside an adult’s skin.
