After All Of This Time

When I was just a small lad of eight
Behind our home and up a ways~
There lived a girl some ten years older
And I'd wonder up to her home some day's~
I wrote her a note a way back then
On a little paper with a pen~
Saying how much I loved her
The longest time a way's back when~
Seems a lifetime had passed by when
A much older man now was I~
And decided to go have a look
At my home town mountains blue sky~
A good thirty years later on
Wanted to see if anything was the same~
By accident I met a mother of a mate
Telling me someone'd love to see you again~
She took me to a cabin out of town
Where there was a woman I did not know~
And when she found out who I was
Her face took on a cheerful glow~
She said stay there I've something to show you
And then rushed off into a room near by~
And came out with an old little bit of paper
When I read it I almost cried~
This woman was dying of cancer then
And living out in the country all alone~
Seemed no body had ever loved her for herself
She stood there almost skin and bone~
But upon her face was still that beauty
And all that caring love was still within~
And when I read that little bit of paper
I never knew just where to begin~
I held out my arms to her then
And hugged that childhood memory~
I thought back then of her a precious soul
And on that day she still was same to me~
I could not believe that after all of that time~
She had kept that note that I wrote that day~
Back when I was but a little boy
I Love You I needed to write and say~
I gave that women the biggest hug
Two weeks after I had arrived home~
I heard that she had passed away
In that cabin all alone~
I then found out she had never married
And lived mostly by herself it's true~
Just gardening and raising chickens
An old farm under mountain in valley dew~
I wonder why how I do so often
How come the most beautiful are alone~
The dearest of heart and loving souls
To see a life out all on their own~
