I can appreciate the fishless fisherman
And his frustration with life-
I've in the past felt fed up his way
and had to face the wife-

Come home many times without a single fish at all
After fishing before sun up and all day~
Used every single kind of bate there was
And the best fishing gear come what may-

Been to all those good and famous spots
All the ones they say are so great~
And because there was not one to be caught
I Blamed the weather,Too early and too late~

Came home smelling just like a dead chicken
That had been for weeks dead in it's pen~
And I've swore upon my mothers grave
That I'd never go fishing ag'en~

But the next time someone said to myself
Do you want to come with me to wet a line~
Without a single thought at all
I already was dreaming of that catch so fine~

Oh I too have lost those biggest beauties
And almost cried as I watched them swim away~
And yes I've said out loud what fishermen do
At that point in time need I say~

I've been told many many times .. I told ya so
By an ex she who must always be obeyed wife~
All because I came home empty handed on the day
Been told often , fishing's a waste of life~

I remember once when young all I'd asked for
Was not to have to fish off a muddy shore~
And one day own a nice big fishing boat
To catch the kind of fish we fishermen all adore~

To come home to the I told you so wife
And have her speechless just gazing at me~
For at the time we were having visitors and
You guessed it .. fish for tea~

And to maybe ask for a little extra help
To get the whole catch out of the car~
As I smiled like an over fed fox
For I too knew a great spot not that far~

To one day actually have a photo
Or ... Maybe even two~
Of something that I caught and landed
That I could show to you~

And yet I still go fishing
And still often come home with non~
And I still get filthy dirty
And still have the hide to call it fun~

I don't know why I keep it up
I only know I do~
Who invented fishing I've often asked
I'd really like to know wouldn't you~

So I can appreciate the fishless fisherman
I know just how he feels~
Come to think of it ... Later on
I must fix all my old rods and reels ~
